Let the IUI process begin

At InSEM the IUI Process is simple and involves the following steps:

Tracking
your Ovulation

We need to track your ovulation as fertility is the highest during this point in the menstrual cycle. That's why we recommend that the IUI procedure is performed just before or as close as possible to the day of ovulation.

The IUI
Procedure

Intrauterine Insemination is a simple procedure that involves placing the prepared sperm (washed sperm from a partner or sperm donor) into the uterus around the time you ovulate.

The Two-Week
Wait

This is the period between your IUI procedure and the point at which a pregnancy test can detect pregnancy with the highest accuracy.

Tracking your ovulation

At InSEM, the body’s natural menstrual cycle is tracked using ovulation test kits to help us determine when ovulation is likely to occur. Ovulation test kits detect hormones associated with follicle growth and ovulation by measuring the amount present in urine, which is usually in the highest concentration first thing in the morning. Since ovulation typically occurs 24-36 hours after a positive ovulation test, the optimum time for IUI can be determined.

Ovulation tests are usually performed daily within 4-5 days of ovulation. For people with a 28-day cycle, starting to test on day 10 of the cycle can predict ovulation over the next 4-6 days. For those who have more variable cycle lengths, testing may need to commence earlier or later. Our nurses will assist you in determining when testing should begin.

Once ovulation has been predicted, a day and time for the IUI procedure are set.

For more information about the menstrual cycle, please read our Menstrual Cycle page.

The IUI procedure

For IUI we use sperm that is either fresh (from a partner) or frozen which is specially prepared in the InSEM laboratory to maximise quality and concentration of the sperm cells.

The sperm is slowly injected directly into the uterus, close to the fallopian tubes. This shorter journey makes it much more likely the sperm will reach its target.

The entire procedure takes a few minutes and is pain-free.

To create an ideal environment for the sperm to travel, we recommend you remain to lie down for at least 20 minutes following the procedure.

At InSEM, you have the option to have the insemination procedure performed by our experienced team at our clinic, or you can choose to do it in the comfort and privacy of your own home with our InSEM kit.

The two-week wait

While the two-week wait can be an exciting and optimistic time of your journey, we know it is also often emotionally charged with expectation and a little anxiety.

We encourage patients to try their best not to fixate too much on the passing time, or what’s going on in their body. Stick to your normal schedule, do some activities you enjoy, and spend time with family or friends, when possible, to take your mind off of the wait. And remember: we are right here rooting for you and ready to support you.

Once you have the results of your pregnancy test, you will need to contact our nurse coordinator to discuss the next steps based on your results.
