IUI is one of the more straightforward fertility treatments, and it can be quite effective in some cases.
The chance for success with treatments including IUI varies with each patient’s unique circumstances, but in general, IUI success rates of approximately 15-19 percent per treatment cycle can be expected. By comparison, the chance for pregnancy to occur in any one menstrual cycle among fertile couples is approximately 20 percent per month.

Is IUI right for me?
IUI is an option for those who are having difficulty with conception on their own and for couples and individuals who need donor sperm to achieve a pregnancy.
IUI treatment is also recommended in a number of different situations
- Infertility caused by mild endometriosis or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
- Unexplained infertility
- Mild male factor infertility – Reduced sperm quality
IUI is not effective with
- Blockage of both fallopian tubes
- Severe endometriosis
- Severe pelvic scarring
- Severe male factor infertility
For these conditions in vitro fertilisation (IVF) is the treatment of choice.
Before a decision is made about whether or not IUI is right for you, your specialised team of nurses and doctors will review your medical history and perform standard testing prior to treatment. This involves routine prenatal testing (blood check-up) and if you have a partner who is providing sperm, a semen assessment to check the sperm.
